How to Enable Chromebook Developer Mode 2022 Tips & Tricks

How to Enable Chromebook Developer Mode: A question is how to enable Chromebook developer mode. A special feature built into Chromebooks is the Developer mode. It makes the laptops more secure while also allowing developers access to the code underneath the Operating System.

A Chromebook’s developer mode might be particularly useful for ChromeOS beta users or those who wish to install special apps. In order to install Linux on a Chromebook, it is also necessary to install developer mode.

You need first to enable Developer Mode on your Chromebook to take advantage of its advanced features. To enable advanced features of ChromeOS, you must first enable developer mode on your Chromebook.

Enabling Chromebook Developer mode

With the Chromebook’s developer mode enabled, you can download the Android APK apps from developers and side-load them. This also includes installing the full Linux system to add dual-boot capabilities.

Important Warnings

You should not proceed without your school’s administrator’s permission if you use the school’s Chromebook.

Your warranty may be void in developer mode: Since you get root access to the Chromebook’s files, Google will not assist in troubleshooting problems when you encounter them. The decision is yours. Because of this, please be careful and know what you’re doing when using this mode.

A Chromebook that has been enabled or disabled in the developer mode is reset every time: Whenever the developer mode toggles, the Chromebook is ‘power washed’, and all user data and profiles are erased. You can log in and sync everything on your Chromebook since everything is hosted in the cloud.

Setting Up Chromebook’s Developer mode

Step 1) The first step you need to take is to put the Chromebook into recovery mode. Turn off your Chromebook by first shutting it down.

Step 2) Hold down the Esc key and the Refresh key, then tap the Power button. Chromebooks typically have a refresh key on the left-hand side of the keyboard. In a standard keyboard, it’s in the same place as the F3 key.

Step 3) When you are in Recovery mode, you should see a message this: “Please insert a USB recovery drive.”

If you have an older device, the Recovery screen may display, “Chrome OS is missing or damaged.” Don’t panic—nothing to worry about.

4) Select the Recovery screen by pressing the Ctrl+D key combination. There will be no instruction about this on the screen of the Recovery mode. As a consequence, you will not be able to enable it if you don’t know what you are doing.

Step 5) A screen showing “Operating System Verification Off” should appear. Press ENTER to turn it off. Rebooting your system will clear local data.” Thus, until you enable developer mode on your Chromebook, the system won’t check the integrity of your system files before starting up. Before booting, Chrome OS typically checks its system files to see if they have been modified and notifies the user if these files are modified. In the event of malicious software or spyware being installed on your system, this feature ensures that your data will remain safe. You need to press Enter.

6) When the Chromebook boots, it will display “OS verification is OFF”.  It will  beep if there has been no activity for a few seconds. Entering developer mode is easily done by pressing Ctrl+D on your Chromebook. Pressing the keys can be done even before the irritating beep appears.

If you enable the developer mode on your Chromebook for the first time, it may take some time before it is ready to use.

Step 7) Your Chromebook will reboot into Recovery mode automatically after the process is completed. To proceed, press Ctrl+D.

Step 8) You will be greeted by a welcome screen.

Step 9) You will need to perform this step if you want to enable booting from USB devices and some other options.

Enabling Debugging

The debugging feature is available when you enable it, as shown below.

  • Remove root verification from Chrome OS system files to allow for modification.
  • For tools such as Cros flash to work on the device, the SSH access must be enabled
  • Installing Linux or another OS on your Chromebook is possible by booting it from USB
  • Then you can manually SSH into the Chromebook by changing the dev and system root login passwords
  • Enable debugging features by clicking Enable debugging features > Proceed > Ctrl + D > and then on Enable.

Step 10) Return to the welcome page. Go ahead and click Let’s go.

Step 11) Read and accept the terms that are associated with Chrome OS.

Step 12) To update Chrome OS using wireless internet, you need to choose the wireless connection.

Step 13) Log in to your Chromebook with your Google credentials. Chrome OS should appear on your desktop.

How to Disable Developer Mode

You can disable developer mode by turning off the Chromebook, turning it back on, waiting for this screen to show that OS verification is OFF, and pressing the spacebar. Your Chromebook will now be set up again. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Conclusion

[su_note note_color=”#f8ccd3″]This concludes the explanation of how to enable developer mode on your Chromebook. In order to perform the procedure, you must first boot into Recovery Mode, then reset the Chromebook (the Powerwash reset) and if you like, enable debugging mode. You can now do anything you want with your Chromebook. Ctrl+Alt+T will launch a terminal window when you are on the desktop, which will lead you to the root shell. Now that you have it, you can do whatever you want! It’s important to remember that with increased access comes greater responsibility. You must double-check your actions so you don’t damage your system files[/su_note].
