3 Fixes for When Chromebook is Not Reading SD Card 2022

3 Fixes for When Chromebook is Not Reading SD Card 2022

With Chromebooks, you have a lot of control over a powerful and convenient device. Due to their Google nature, they can access a wide variety of great apps and features offered by the platform. They’re used on a daily basis both personally and professionally, for this reason.

It is, however, normal to experience problems with nearly every form of technology. As we mentioned above, in this article we’ll look at how to resolve Chromebook not reading SD cards. In that case, you’d be able to get out of an irritating and problematic situation.

When Chromebook is Not Reading Sd Card

3 Fixes for When Chromebook is Not Reading SD Card

Fix #1 – Hardware Reset

A hardware reset of the Chromebook is the first thing you should try to read an SD card on it. You can’t just shut down and restart your Chromebook with this method. It completely resets more parameters. If you’re experiencing issues reading an SD card on your Chromebook, follow the steps below.

  • Your Chromebook should be completely shut down. The Chromebook must be turned off, not just closed and the lid closed. To perform the hardware reset, the device must be powered down.
  • Your Chromebook must be empty of its SD card.
  • At least 10 seconds should be held down while holding both the Power and Refresh buttons.
  • Click on Refresh to refresh the screen.
  • Hold the Power button for a few seconds.
  • After restarting your Chromebook, it should go through its normal process.
  • See if you can read your SD card now after inserting it.

Fix #2 – Make Sure Software is Updated

There are also software issues that can occur if you do not have the most recent updates installed on your Chromebook that can prevent SD cards from being read. It is possible to fix this issue by checking for updates. You will usually notice that your Chromebook will automatically check for updates if you have an internet connection and are logged in. The below steps, however, should be followed if, for some reason, it does not update.

  • Start your Chromebook.
  • A stable internet connection must be established on the Chromebook.
  • At the bottom right of the screen, click the time icon.
  • Select Settings from the menu.
  • To get to the About Chrome OS section, select the About Chrome OS button located at the bottom left of the Settings window.
  • Pop up will say “Google Chrome OS”. The current version of your operating system will be displayed.
  • Updates can be found by clicking Update.
  • Chromebook will automatically begin downloading newer versions if there are any updates available.

You should also receive an update notification when there is a new version. Alternatively, you can simply click on the notification and click “Restart to Update”.

If your SD card cannot be read after the update, remove it during the update process and replace it after it is complete.

Fix #3 – Reformat SD Card

You will most likely need to reformat your SD card if the first two fixes do not work. During this process, all data on the card will be deleted, so make sure that you have a backup of any important files on the card before attempting the reformat.

You can reformat a Chromebook SD card by following these steps:

  • Turn on your Chromebook.
  • The SD card should be connected via USB (or whatever port you are using).
  • Files will open.
  • Choose the SD card that needs reformatting. Make sure you’ve selected the right drive before continuing.
  • Right-click or two-finger tap the SD drive.
  • Click on Format Device in the options menu.
  • If you continue with the formatting and erasure of data, a window will pop up asking you if you wish to do so.
  • Then click OK.
  • After things are complete, your SD card will have been reformatted.
  • Adding files to your SD card and checking if it now works on your computer is now possible.

The FAT32 file system will be automatically created during this process. Those formats are widely used and work across different devices, but they may not be what you prefer. You can, however, reformat directly on your Chromebook with this method.

Last Resort Fix – Get a New SD

There’s a possibility that you’ll need a new SD card to be able to read the files properly if your SD card is bad. Getting a new card will be your last resort if none of the other options above fix the problem. Your SD card data may need to be recovered if they are important to you.

Having a few SD cards with you always will ensure that you won’t need to go out and get a new one. The price of SD cards is quite reasonable.

As a backup, I recommend always making a copy of your SD card in case it cannot be repaired. By doing so, you’ll be able to navigate through the files easily without losing anything. A second method to double-check the SD card is to plug it into another device before performing the above steps.

Final Thoughts

[su_note note_color=”#f7bdce”]There’s no need to panic if you can’t read your SD card on your Chromebook. You can get everything back to normal in no time if you follow these steps outlined in this article. All of these methods are fairly simple, but if they don’t work there’s a possibility your SD card is corrupt and cannot be saved. Just in case, make sure you backup your files![/su_note]
