Despite being in beta, setting up the operating system can take a little while, but once you’re up and running, you’re greeted with a fortress of Linux apps to enjoy. Best Chromebook For Elementary

Can Chromebook Run Linux

Since this was designed for developers who require a full range of development tools and code editors, it also provides access to many other applications such as office applications like LibreOffice and graphics tools like Krita and GIMP. So let’s get some Linux.

  1. Chromebooks compatible with Linux

Hardware-wise, most Chromebooks made in 2019 and later should support Linux. Older Arm systems may not support hardware virtualization, which can be the case for the CPU.

The Chromebook must run Chrome OS version 69 or newer (released August 2018) and have a processor that can run Linux.

If you want to know what version of the OS you’re using, type chrome://version in your address bar and look at the top number. If you prefer to run something newer than this, you can check for updates by selecting Notification (bottom right) > Settings (cog) > About Chrome OS > Additional Details to learn about scheduled updates.

  1. Set up Linux!

Chromebooks that are capable of running Linux can now be configured by clicking on the Notification area at the bottom right > Settings icon, which translates to “Cog icon” in English. Then choose Linux (Beta), which is now turned on by default.

The Linux system will ask for the username and amount of storage to be used. This can be changed later, so don’t worry too much at this stage, but it appears this storage must belong to the system, not a memory card or USB device.

You may need to rethink your internal storage if this becomes something you use a lot.

  1. Set up some permissions

Your Chromebook’s Linux system runs in a “sandbox,” meaning it is separate from the rest of your system and cannot damage it.

You can configure these settings via the Settings > Linux > …Find out more link. Set permissions to use certain features of the Linux sandbox.

As an example, you can let Linux access your microphone here.

  1. Welcome to the Terminal

The first thing you see after installing Linux on your Chromebook is a blank terminal window. Linux is known for using this text interface to frighten you away.

It is actually quite easy to handle things when you know exactly what command to type in.

The first time you install Chromebook Linux, you should ensure it is fully upgraded and up-to-date with:

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

The script runs two commands. You’ll be asked to update the Software by pressing Y to run any updates. First, it will verify all Software is up-to-date online, and then it will ask you to update the Software. Hint: press Y.

  1. Install a Linux software store

It is possible to install Linux on Chromebook via the Terminal and get everything working, but you might find it more convenient to install a graphical software store instead, type:

sudo apt-get install gnome-software gnome-packagekit

When the terminal reports it has been installed, close it after pressing Y to begin the installation.

Find the Linux apps entry in the Launcher, then click Software. It is usual for the software selection page to show a selection of categories with lots of options within. However, we found that the selected page is blank and many users report the same problem. You can force an update by following the next step.

  1. Adding more Linux software sources

Linux software can be downloaded from a number of sources, the first step is testing, which OS developers do, but it may contain older versions.

The new Flatpak system allows apps to be updated directly by the developer. Enter these commands into the Terminal to add them to the Gnome Software store:

sudo apt install flatpak

sudo flatpak remote-add –if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

sudo apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak

You’ll be offered an option to do a full refresh after installing the new plugin that will load all the software categories.

  1. Linux software installation

Gnome Software is the best way to add a Linux app. Use the magnifying glass icon to search for Audacity using the Chrome Launcher at the bottom left.

The category Audio & Video might have led you to it, or you could have browsed under Audio Creation and found it or searched Audio Editing.

Click the headphone icon, and Audacity is an open-source professional sound editing program. To install it, click ‘Install’.

The Chromebook Launcher will allow you to install all your Linux apps into the Linux App folder, where they can be pinned to the app bar as usual.

  1. Download and install Flatpak Linux software.

The previous step included installing Linux software from the standard repository; however, these can become dated over time. Our Flatpak system typically contains the latest version of the Linux software.

Apparently, people prefer Spotify, so you can use Flatpaks by browsing flathub.org. The big INSTALL button should not be clicked; instead, scroll further down and find the following terminal commands:

sudo flatpak install flathub com.spotify.Client

sudo flatpak run com.spotify.Client

These can be run in succession by selecting Launcher > Linux apps > Terminal and typing them – or copying/pasting them.

  1. Linux files in, Linux files out

On Chromebooks, Linux comes with a shared “Linux files” folder that can be accessed from My Files under the Files app.

Normally, Chrome OS can access any Linux files and the Linux system, but Chrome OS files are protected from the Linux OS.

Creating a shared folder in Files works better for external storage than local storage, so right-click that folder and choose Share with Linux.

The Linux filesystem is hard to grasp, so you have to access the sharing file system through an app like Audacity above, select Open > File System (aka Root) > Mounted > ChromeOS to see which folders you shared and what files are within.

  1. Backing up and removing Linux

In addition to taking up a lot of space, installing a second OS on your Chromebook may require you to remove it at some point. You can easily remove it by clicking on Settings > Linux > Remove, and it will disappear!

Depending on your preferences, you may wish to backup the Linux environment before performing those procedures. By selecting this file, you can restore your entire Tumi database back to the state before making the backup.

Linux can be removed entirely from your Chromebook and placed back exactly as it had been. Best Laptops For 400$
